What Does Waterproof Actually Mean? (QOTM December 2021)

Posted by Candice Simpson on

When it comes to powered sex toys, sooner or later the question that comes up is – can I take this in the tub with me?

There are many terms and descriptions available on the packaging and instructions that sometimes add more to the confusion that actually help. There are “splashproof”, “water resistant”, “waterproof”, “100% waterproof” and “submersible” options available.

Splash Proof, Water Resistant, Waterproof

These descriptions mean that you can get water on the toy without destroying it. These types of toys can be cleaned with water and you can hold them under the tap and you can usually take them in the shower with you. But you cannot take them into the tub. Should you accidentally fully submerge them it is a good idea to open up the battery compartment, remove the batteries and let it dry out completely.

Submersible, 100% Waterproof

This means that the toy is completely sealed and water will not get into it. These kinds of toys can be completely immersed in water and be taken into the tub for play time. Most of the time manufacturers will refer to these as submersible, but some manufacturers may refer to them as 100% waterproof.

For example, the We-vibe Chorus is 100% Waterproof. This is a rechargeable couples’ toy, but there is no physical plug that goes into an opening in the toy. It charges electromagnetically instead. This allows for it to be completely sealed, and as a result to be submersible.

Cleaning toys

Be careful with boiling or putting tools in the dishwasher. As a general rule, do not boil tools or put tools in a dishwasher that have electrical components. The exception are toys where the electrical component can be removed.

Summary

Some electrical toys are fully submersible and can be used in the bath tub, most are not.

If you intend to use a toy in the tub, make sure to communicate that with the sales associate you are talking to and they can help you make the right choice. You can also try to reach out to the manufacturer of the toy to get definitive information. That way you make 100% sure that you do not void the warranty on your toy.
